Our international selection had the chance to play an official trial game against the U17 of SV Elversberg, who compete in the U17 DFB-Nachwuchsliga, the highest league for this age group in Germany. We lost 5–1. And three of our players left that afternoon with something worth far more than a result.
The opponent: the team of the moment
SV Elversberg is the club German football is talking about right now. The first team was promoted to the Bundesliga this season and beat Bayer Leverkusen 3–2 on its debut. Behind that rise stands an academy whose U17 plays at the highest level in the country.
For a group of international players, that is about as demanding as a trial game gets. Which is exactly why we wanted it.
The result: 5–1
Our team held its own and kept competing until the final whistle. In the end we lost 5–1. We say that openly, because the score is not what a game like this is about.
A selection of players who met only weeks earlier, against an academy team that trains together every day, in the top league of its age group. The gap on the scoreboard is honest. So is what came next.
What actually mattered
Elversberg's staff were not the only ones watching. Scouts from other clubs were at the pitch as well. After the game, three of our players found clubs in the second-highest league for their age group in Germany.
That is how a trial game works when it is set up properly. You are not playing for one club. You are playing in front of several. A good performance does not have to convince the opponent, it only has to convince someone who is watching.
You do not need to win the game. You need to be seen in it.
The Hernandez brothers
One example: the Hernandez brothers. After this game, both of them found an official club and now play for FK Pirmasens.
And the players without an offer?
Not every player in our selection left that day with a new club. That is normal. But every one of them left with a clear picture. They saw how fast the ball moves at the top of German youth football, how quickly space closes and how physical every duel is.
That picture is worth more than any description, because it gives the next weeks of training a direction. Some players will need a few more months. Some will be ready sooner than they think. Either way, they now know the level instead of guessing it.
Why we play games like this
Official trial games against the best are one of the most valuable parts of our program, and not only because of the scouts. They answer a question that no training session can:
- Where do I really stand? Not against your own team, but against the level you want to reach.
- What is still missing? Ninety minutes against a top academy show it more clearly than any feedback.
- Or am I already ready? For some players, the honest answer is yes. Then the next step can come quickly.
We are proud that we could make this possible for our players. Playing official games, showing yourself, and seeing the best of the best in Germany up close: that is what our International Soccer Program is built for.
